Malacca is a place full of historical sites, and I’m going to introduce the Jonker Street as well as the Stadthuys. They are both near to each other, always full of tourists to come over for visiting.

Jonker Street as an ancient street, combines monument, culture, and leisure for people to enjoy at the moment. Since the state of Malacca was colonized by the Netherlands, the Jonker Street was also known as the Jonker Walk, mainly referring to the Dutch Noble Street. It has now became a prosperous and cultural and tourist attraction.

600 years ago, the famous diplomatic envoy of the Ming Dynasty in China, Zheng He’s seven ocean voyages and six times in Malacca, he set up a factory there, and more than 20 surrounding streets and lanes with Jonker Street as the mainstay became the earliest concentrated areas where Chinese moved to Nanyang.

During Chinese Festivals, Jonker Street is full of exciting activities like New Year’s Eve, Dragon and Lion Dance Lantern row, which forms a rich Chinese culture.

From Monday to Friday, there are storefronts selling souvenirs, food, native products, clothing and others, where a lot of things to see and buy.

Jonker Street

Address: Jalan Hang Jebat, 75200 Melaka.

The church above is located beside the entrance of Jonker Street. It was built in 1908, with a donation of USD5,000 collected from races of Chinese, English, Tamil, and Baba. The activities here are conducted in Tamil and English. The church is not available for visiting at other times.

 

This is the river where located in the Jonker Street, the night view around the river is wonderful.

 

There are some temples can be seen when you walk along Jonker Street. The first picture of Kuan Yin Tong Temple was established in 1894, opened at 7am to 5.30pm. The next photo is a Hokkien Huay Kuan Temple which the entrance is decorated with the expected dragon tiger murals and the most special pillar arrangements, both of which are made up of dragon scales.

This is the is the mausoleum of Hang Kasturi. Hang Kasturi’s tomb, which is thought to be over 550 years old, is found behind a decorative gateway inscribed Makam Hang Kasturi in jawi script.

It is a mini park with art sculptures, and with a public toilet inside the park.

 

Geographer Café is a pub which always full of people who enjoys nightlife, especially foreigners. The mixture of good Asian and Western pub grub, a funky, laidback and warm atmosphere, great music and friendly service are its special characteristics to attract customers. The Famosa Chicken Rice Ball is famous in Malacca which many people came for it, the restaurant has attractive shop front and interior decoration.

San Shu Gong is a shop full of local goodies where visitors can buy for their family and friends. The Durian Cendol is a well-known dessert which most of the people will try when they came here. There are also local snacks and tea, can satisfy most customers’ preferences.

Above are the night views of Jonker Street, bustling with noise with excitement. The night market is opened on Friday until Saturday, starting from 6pm until 12am. There are array of food, souvenirs, and entertainment which is suitable for young and old to visit. There are also a stage for performance, and I usually see elderly people sing Hokkien songs and this is a kind of entertainment for them.

 

I have bought these two, ma chi and charcoal ice cream when i walk through the stalls at night. There are still many foodstuffs for you to try along the street.

Stadthuys

Above is also a historical place which mentioned at first, called Stadthuys. This 17th-century building was the seat of the Dutch administration and now has a history museum. It was founded between 1641 and 1660, Stadthuys in Malacca is located on the ruins of the Portuguese fortress. From 1980 to 1980, it has become the focus of several successive governments like Netherlands, Portugal, Britain, etc. It has a history of more than 300 years. In 1982, Stadthuys became a museum.

Behind the fountain, there is Christ Church which is located at the other side of Stadthuys, everyone can visit the church as it is an open area. It is an 18th-century Anglican church and the oldest Protestant church in Malaysia and is located within the jurisdiction of the Lower Central Archdeaconry of the Anglican Diocese of Western Malaysia.
